herskin's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Her Wish to Fly After spending the first three hours of her day in a meeting about state governmental affairs, she finds herself back in her office listening to Coldplay as she returns calls and replies to emails. They tell her, “I'll start before I can stop, before I see things the right way up.” Almost like a habit that she can’t control, she is less than focused. Half a story lies open in her word processing program, but she has nowhere to go with it. The article has to be finished soon, but she waits for responses to come on her inquiry. Eventually, she will have to move onto other sources if no one calls. But, for now, she sits quietly and waits. On her lunch, she will pad off into the beautiful weather to an office supply store to find a new book to keep notes in. In her short time, she already has a legal pad full of her scrawls and absentminded doodles. She is getting better at looking like she is paying attention. She often counts things in the room to keep her occupied. Some conversations are above her head, and others she just doesn’t care about. As she contemplates this, Modest Mouse drifts from the small silver speakers of her computer. “We’ll all float on,” they promise. She wishes she were as sure. She wishes to escape the beigeness of the office and enjoy the day. She would love to sleep in a hammock in the backyard at home, letting the shade envelope her like a blanket. Another memo hits her desk as she contemplates making a run for it. A stack of notes to be translated into a readable document are on her left, a stack of articles to clip for the archive on the right. She has an agenda to review, a booklet to summarize, and articles to edit. She just wants to escape. Lenny Kravitz is singing now, “I want to get away, I wanna fly away.” She concurs. When do you think I'll be okay? If I should stay, when do I pray? If I should stay, where do I begin?
